Getting a good night’s sleep is something that we often take for granted until we start having sleep problems. Those problems can present themselves in a variety of different ways, with noise being one of the main culprits that keep us from getting the sleep that we deserve.
Dealing With Noise At Home When You Want To Sleep
For some people, a spouse or other loved one is the cause of the noise. Most of the time, it is due to that person snoring, but if you live with someone like my brother, then it is just the noise of a night owl moving around the house when everyone else is trying to sleep!
Fortunately, there are lots of easy ways to deal with noise in the home that is preventing you from falling asleep or sleeping soundly. Things like ear plugs and noise cancelling machines for sleeping are great ways to block out the unwanted sounds. You can also take steps to better soundproof your bedroom. And if a family member is to blame, you can discuss the problem with a doctor or with the family member. Of course, if someone is snoring as a result of a medical issue, your only option might be some good ear plugs for snoring relief, unless you want to sleep in another room by yourself.
Dealing With Outside Noise When You’re Trying To Sleep
Often, the noise can be blamed on other people – or their pets. Common sources of outside noise while you are trying to sleep include barking dogs, neighbors talking loudly, music or television noise from the neighbors, music from passing cars on the road outside, horns and other noise from automobiles, train noises if you live near some tracks and even music from a nearby business that is open late.
To get some relief from other people’s noises, you can take some of the same steps that you do for inside noise, as well as add some noise cancelling curtains to the windows. Of course, if you share a wall with them, then you can try asking them to be quieter or even get the authorities involved if they are violating the local noise ordinance. This is often an easy way to deal with barking dogs.
Dealing With Sleeping Noise When You Travel
Home is not the only place that you have to deal with other people’s noise while trying to sleep. If you have ever been on an overnight flight or in a hotel with little soundproofing, then you know how annoying it can be when you want to sleep and everyone else wants to make noise. Sometimes it seems like they are doing it on purpose, right?
In hotels, sometimes the problem is just too much space between the door and the floor, which means that you need to block sound from coming under the door. If you have neighbors who sound like they are throwing a party in the room next to you, a call down to the front desk often solves that problem. You might even be able to move to another room, if that interests you.
